On October 1st, at 2 p.m. West African Time, a landmark virtual workshop convened by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is set to explore the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in crime prevention within the African context.

This collaborative effort, organized in conjunction with the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Technology Against Crime (TAC) in Africa, the CyberPeace Foundation, and the AI Media Group, promises to delve into critical issues such as the readiness of law enforcement communities in Africa to harness AI, and the emerging threats associated with the intersection of AI and crime.

The workshop represents a significant opportunity for representatives from African countries to engage in dialogue, share insights, and collectively chart a path forward in leveraging AI for crime prevention. With the rapid advancement of technology, including AI and robotics, the landscape of crime is evolving, presenting both challenges and opportunities for law enforcement agencies across the continent.

Keynote speakers at the event will include esteemed thought leaders in the fields of digital cooperation and AI initiatives. Ms. Nanjira Sambuli, a distinguished member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel for Digital Cooperation, brings a wealth of expertise in advocating for digital rights and equitable access to technology. Joining her is Mr. Keith Strier, Vice President of Worldwide AI Initiatives at NVIDIA, a global leader in AI computing technology. Their insights and perspectives are poised to enrich discussions on the potential of AI in enhancing crime prevention efforts and mitigating emerging threats.

Among the topics slated for discussion are the current state of AI-readiness among law enforcement communities in Africa, strategies for fostering collaboration and capacity building in AI adoption, and the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in crime prevention. Additionally, participants will explore new and emerging threats stemming from the misuse or exploitation of AI technologies by malicious actors, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to safeguard against such risks.

The virtual workshop serves as a testament to the commitment of UNICRI and its partners to catalyze dialogue, foster innovation, and promote international cooperation in addressing complex challenges at the nexus of AI and crime prevention. By harnessing the collective expertise and insights of diverse stakeholders, the workshop aims to drive actionable outcomes that contribute to building safer and more resilient communities across Africa.

As the continent embraces the transformative potential of AI, this collaborative endeavor holds the promise of shaping a future where technology serves as a force for good, empowering law enforcement agencies to effectively combat crime and uphold the rule of law.
